That the architecture of Weiss/Manfredi resists stylistic or typological pigeonholing is a tribute not only to the variety of work this New York-based firm has completed, but also, more importanty, to the intelligence and sensitivity of their approach to design. Their work is both intellectually rigorous and eminently legible; it works at a grand scale, yet it pays meticulous attention to the constructed detail. Many of their projects capitalize on the hybrid conditions created by the intersection of the city, infrastructure, and the landscape, locating the focus of the work at a point somewhere between zones of urbanity and intimacy. The projects presented in this monograph include the competition-winning designs for the Women's Memorial and Education Center at Arlington National Cemetery and the Olympia Fields Park and Community Center in Illinois; urban infrastructure proposals, such as their interventions at the Brooklyn Bridge and Columbus Circle in New York, and interior renovations, including those at Columbia University.
